How We Solved a Customer's Sheep Farm Ear Tag Management Challenges with UHF RFID Readers?

What is the vertical distance your panels can read and can they be connected so a reader can be set up on either side of the gate?

Our experience is that LF tags reading is not accurate unless the ewes move slowly and in single file. This is not practical for large mobs (500-1000). If the ewe drops or raises her head on the way past it may not be read. Hence my interest in the HF readers. 

We are also interested in the HF tags for recording lambs. The ewes generally stay within 5 m of the lambs when we catch and tag them at birth. We need to identify the mother and so it would be good to scan her HF tag rather than rely on visually reading the large cattle tag in her ear. This creates errors. 

We are keen on trialling different options, so want to understand what each technology can and can’t do!

Thank you for your detailed feedback. 

For the LF panel reader, it can read about 35-40cm, normally it is suitable for dairy farm, the cow will not move very fast.

Based on your farm scenarios, we recommend UHF ear tags, instead of UH ear tags, HF's reading distance is just about 30cm also, not too long, can't meet your needs.

To solve your two specific challenges, we have two types of UHF readers that can form a perfect solution for you:

Solutions 1: Fixed UHF Reader for the Gate (Handling 500-1,000 Mobs) for your gate where sheep run past quickly, we recommend our fixed UHF reader.

Available 9dBi gain antenna, it reads up to 6 meters. For 10dBi gain antenna,the distance reaches up to 12 meters.

These two fixed readers's reading distance is enough for you.

Solution 2:  Using handheld UHF Reader for Ewe-Lamb Matching (5-Meter Range) for catching lambs in the field and identifying the mother within 5 meters.
